Science is a language-rich discipline, making it essential for educators to ensure that students’ science learning is intentionally aligned with structured literacy and the science of reading. High-quality science instruction supports structured literacy by providing authentic opportunities to build background knowledge, vocabulary, and comprehension. Together, NGSS and structured literacy reinforce one another by strengthening students’ ability to make sense of complex texts, ideas, and evidence across disciplines.
The connections between science and structured literacy can be found in the following areas:
- Background knowledge
- Vocabulary
- Language Structures
- Verbal Reasoning (inference)
- Literacy Knowledge
The KSDE Science team is currently working on developing additional resources to support structured literacy in the content area of science.
