The Kansas State Board of Education (KSBE) oversees public K–12 education across the state. As established in the Kansas Constitution, the Board provides general supervision of public schools and the educational interests of Kansas, except for institutions governed by the Kansas Board of Regents. Its responsibilities include setting education policy, adopting academic standards, overseeing educator licensure, and establishing the statewide accreditation system to help ensure Kansas students receive a high-quality education. The Board also appoints the Commissioner of Education, who serves as its executive officer and carries out its policies.
KSBE’s mission is to prepare Kansas students for lifelong success through strong academics, career preparation, and character development. It leads statewide improvement efforts through its Kansans CAN vision.
The Kansas State Board of Education is made up of 10 elected members, each representing a district composed of four contiguous senatorial districts. Members serve staggered four‑year terms. Every two years, the Board reorganizes to elect a Chair and Vice Chair. The current Chair is Cathy Hopkins, and the Vice Chair is Danny Zeck. The State Board also appoints the Commissioner of Education, who serves as its executive director; the current Commissioner is Dr. Randy Watson.
