English Learners Proficiency Standards
The Kansas Standards for English Learners (2018) guide all educators in supporting English Learners to develop English proficiency quickly and effectively so they can succeed with grade-level academic standards. The standards emphasize both social and academic English and stress shared responsibility among teachers through scaffolded, experiential, and collaborative instruction aligned to grade-level curriculum.
Developed for grades K–8, 9–10, and 11–12, the standards focus on the four communication domains—reading, writing, speaking, and listening. They reflect a communicative, culturally responsive approach to language learning that integrates social and academic purposes, preparing English Learners for success in school and beyond.
