Mathematics K-12 Learning Standards
The Kansas State Math Standards are designed to define what students should understand and be able to do in mathematics, balancing both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency. Their purpose is to ensure that students not only know how to carry out mathematical procedures but also understand the reasoning behind them, preparing them to apply knowledge flexibly to new problems. While the Standards outline grade-level expectations, they do not prescribe specific teaching methods or interventions, instead allowing for flexibility in supporting diverse learners. Ultimately, they serve as clear, high expectations that all students—regardless of background, learning needs, or abilities—should have the opportunity to meet in order to be prepared for success beyond high school.
