Postsecondary Partnerships

Postsecondary partnerships in Kansas Career and Technical Education (CTE) are collaborations between high schools and postsecondary schools, such as community colleges, technical colleges, and universities. These partnerships help students earn college credit, learn job‑ready skills, and prepare for careers while still in high school.

These partnerships may include:

  • Dual and Concurrent Enrollment: Students can take college‑level courses while in high school and earn both high school and college credit at the same time.
  • Articulation Agreements: Articulation agreements allow students to transfer credit from high school CTE courses into related college programs if requirements are met. For more information, visit the Statewide Articulation Agreements webpage.
  • Excel in CTE: Through Excel in CTE, Kansas pays tuition for approved college‑level CTE courses taken by high school students, helping families save money.
  • Career Pathways: High school CTE pathways are aligned with postsecondary programs of study, so students continue building skills without repeating coursework.
  • Industry‑Recognized Credentials: Some partnerships allow students to earn certifications or credentials that are recognized by employers and colleges.
  • Work‑Based Learning: Colleges may work with high schools to support internships, job shadowing, apprenticeships, or clinical experiences.

Excel in CTE (formerly Senate Bill 155)

Excel in CTE, formerly known as Senate Bill 155, became law on July 1, 2012. The main goal of this program is to support and grow Career and Technical Education (CTE) in Kansas at both the high school and college levels.

Kansas employers need workers with strong technical skills, and Excel in CTE helps students prepare for these future jobs. The program encourages students to take CTE courses that lead to in‑demand careers.

One key part of Excel in CTE is financial support. This includes:

  • Tuition reimbursement for high school students who take approved college‑level CTE courses
  • A CTE marketing campaign to share the value of CTE programs and career opportunities
