School Transportation

The School Transportation website provides statewide guidance, resources, and oversight for the safe transportation of students in Kansas. The School Transportation Safety Unit, supports school districts and transportation providers with inspection requirements, training programs, safety guidance, regulatory interpretation, and transportation related resources. This website is intended for school transportation professionals and administrators seeking official KSDE information related to school bus and school vehicle safety.

Bus and School Vehicle Inspections

Between June 1 and September 30, each year all Kansas School Buses, Activity Buses and School Passenger Vehicles shall be inspected.

CDL Drug and Alcohol

Kansas schools which employ CDL drivers, shall comply with all applicable Federal Drug and Alcohol testing requirements.

CDL Information

Kansas bus drivers are required a class A or B, CDL for an activity and or school bus with a gross weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more and/or rated for passenger capacity of 16 or more, including the driver.

Entry Level Driver Training

ELDT is a federal rule, which establishes minimum training requirements for individuals who are applying for or upgrading their CDL.

Kansas School Bus Emergency Support System

KBESS- a statewide directory for Kansas school transportation providers who need support when their vehicle becomes disabled away from their district.

National Loading and Unloading Survey

The National School Bus Loading and Unloading Survey is a collection of fatality accident reports provided by state agencies.

Physical Information for Bus Drivers

All Kansas Activity/School Bus Drivers are required to have a physical regardless of the passenger rating of the bus.

School District Maps

The Kansas Geographic Information System has a web-based map that allows the searching for addresses to determine district affiliation and boundaries.

School Vehicle Purchasing

This page contains information to assist Kansas schools in purchasing school vehicles. Link and help documents to the Kansas Bus Purchasing Program, a voluntary program designed to assist Kansas Unified School Districts and Interlocal Cooperative Agreements in purchasing a quality bus at a competitive price.
