Kansas Course Codes
In Kansas, a committee was formed to develop standard course codes that could be used by all schools across the state. The goal was to create a consistent system that could be used for educator licenses, employment reports, and student records. When used statewide, these codes also help ensure consistency on student transcripts across districts.
The Kansas Course Codes are a set of numerical codes that describe the courses taught by licensed teachers and completed by elementary and secondary students.
In June 2007, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) published the Secondary School Course Classification System (SCED). This system was designed to help states and school districts:
- Keep long-term electronic student records
- Share course information between student information systems
- Meet state and federal reporting requirements
- Reduce the cost and workload of transcript studies
- Use course data for research and student outcome analysis
The Kansas Course Codes Management System (KCCMS) is the online tool schools use to enter and manage their course information. These course codes are used in Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Pathways applications, as well as for KCAN reporting for:
- Virtual school students over age 19
- Migrant students
- CTE and Pathways students
- Dual credit courses
To use KCCMS, users must apply for an account through the Kansas Individual Data on Students (KIDS) system.
