Professional Development

Professional development is ongoing learning that helps educators grow and succeed in their work. It is designed around an individual’s needs and may help them prepare for their role, maintain their ability to practice, strengthen their knowledge or skills, or meet requirements set by their employer. Most importantly, professional development should make a positive difference—benefiting the individual, their students, their school, or their school district by supporting better learning and outcomes.

Understanding Professional Learning

This section explains common professional learning terms in clear, simple language to help you understand how growth and learning are measured and supported in education.

Professional Development Plan

A professional development plan is a written document that outlines the in‑service education activities an individual plans to complete over a specific period of time. It serves as a roadmap for professional growth, helping educators stay focused on learning goals and required activities.

Professional Development Points

A professional development point represents one hour of in‑service education. These points are used to track completed learning activities. College coursework may also count—one semester hour of college credit equals 20 professional development points.

Professional Education Standards

Professional education standards are guidelines adopted by the state board that define the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for specific roles in education. These standards help ensure educators are prepared and effective in their positions.

Service to the Profession

Service to the profession includes activities that support the growth of other educators or the education system as a whole. This may involve helping others improve their teaching methods or subject knowledge, supporting licensure or accreditation efforts, or participating in professional education organizations.

Staff Development

Staff development is ongoing learning provided to groups of educators. It focuses on building shared skills and knowledge to achieve common goals or support the priorities of a school or school district.

Together, these elements support continuous learning, accountability, and high-quality education for students and professionals alike.
