Kansas School Bus Emergency Support System

The Kansas Department of Education and the School Transportation Safety Unit have been producing the Kansas Bus Emergency Support System (KBESS) book for over 35 years.  This book is a statewide emergency directory for Kansas school transportation providers who need support when the school vehicle they are operating becomes disabled away from their district.

The KBESS book is updated annually at the beginning of each school year in July.  An online form is used to update contact information to provide mutual aid support for a Kansas school bus or activity bus while traveling in the state away from their district services. Please read the update directions carefully and completely prior to accessing the online form.

KBESS Update Form

It is mandatory that school districts submit three individuals who are willing to be contacted and assist in the event of an emergency with a school vehicle traveling in your district. This, of course, can occur “after hours” and individuals listed must be willing to help when needed and must provide a cell phone number.

STEP 1 - Please read all directions carefully before completing the KBESS update form.

It is mandatory that school districts submit three individuals who are willing to be contacted and assist in the event of an emergency. This, of course, can occur “after hours” and individuals listed must be willing to help when needed.  The secondary number submitted for each of these individuals must be a non-school (home or cellphone) number.

This must be completed online and submitted as soon as possible, but not later than July 26

It is required that the transportation director be one of the three individuals listed.  The transportation director must be employed by the school district.  This cannot be a contractor employee

It is extremely important that the information be accurate

Please do not send an email and say nothing has changed.  The update form is a computer application that populates the data for us. If you do not fill out the form, the application will show the school district did not respond and you will continue to receive emails reminding you to submit the information.  If you submit incorrect information, that is what will appear in the KBESS book

You must submit a secondary number for each person listed in KBESS.  This number must be a number where they can be reached after hours.  DO NOT submit the school/office number as the secondary number

Even if information for just one person has changed, all 3 contacts must be re-entered

Please submit only ONE form per district.  Please communicate within your district to determine who is responsible for completing the form. Only the first form received will be uploaded into the KBESS book.  If your information changes after you submit, you will be given an opportunity in mid-August to submit those changes

This information must be submitted online. Paper forms, phone calls, emails, faxes, etc. will not be accepted.
I have read these directions.
