District Resources
This four-year, competency-based apprenticeship program combines the rigor and training of a registered apprenticeship with specialized education for individuals aspiring to become teachers.
Developed with paraprofessionals, graduating high school seniors and non-degreed staff in mind, this program provides Kansas districts a grow-your-own solution to address teacher vacancy issues. District-selected apprentices are compensated for on-the-job learning while earning a bachelor’s degree in education. Upon graduation and successful completion of the program, apprentices receive a license to teach in Kansas and are placed in one of the district’s classrooms.
Through the Registered Teacher Apprenticeship, districts can actively invest in the development of their workforce while nurturing talent from within the community. This program provides a structured framework for apprentices to undergo rigorous training, mentoring, and assessment, ensuring they acquire the necessary skills and competencies to excel as educators. This program encourages districts to cultivate a diverse cohort of educators who bring unique perspectives and experiences to the classroom, enriching the learning environment for students and faculty alike.
Why Should a School District Consider a Registered Teacher Apprentice?
School districts across Kansas continue to face challenges in recruiting and retaining qualified educators. At the same time, many districts already employ individuals who possess the skills, dedication, and commitment needed to become highly effective teachers. Paraprofessionals, instructional aides, special education aides, substitute teachers, bus drivers, clerical staff, coaches, and other school employees often have established relationships with students, understand district culture, and are deeply invested in the success of their communities. The Kansas Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program provides districts with a structured pathway to develop this existing talent into licensed educators.
The Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program combines paid employment, on-the-job learning, college coursework leading to a bachelor's degree and teacher licensure, mentorship, and a progressive wage scale into a single workforce development model. By participating in the program, districts can create a sustainable "grow-your-own" teacher pipeline, provide career advancement opportunities for current employees, and play an active role in preparing future teachers who understand the unique needs of their schools and students. The following frequently asked questions are designed to help districts determine whether apprenticeship is the right fit and understand the steps necessary to successfully implement and support an apprentice.
