Higher Education Teacher Preparation Standards

The educator standards in Kansas are designed to guide teacher preparation programs and ensure that future educators are well-equipped to support student learning. These standards are organized into two main categories:

Professional Education Standards

These standards are based on the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) model, which was developed by a group of states to define what teachers should know and be able to do. Kansas has adapted these standards to include additional areas such as:

  • Curriculum integration
  • History and philosophy of education
  • Educational technology

Teacher preparation programs use these standards to design the professional education coursework that supports all teaching endorsement areas.

Content Standards

These standards define the specific knowledge and skills required for each endorsement area (e.g., mathematics, science, English). Approved teacher preparation programs must align their curriculum with these content standards to ensure candidates are prepared to teach their chosen subject effectively.
