Reminder: Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot window closes Sept. 22

By Amanda Petersen, director, KSDE early childhood

The deadline is approaching for all Kansas elementary schools to partner with families of incoming kindergarten students to collect kindergarten-entry data using the Ages & Stages Questionnaires®, Third Edition (ASQ-3) and the Ages & Stages Questionnaires®: Social-Emotional, Second Edition (ASQ:SE-2). The window to screen 2025-2026 kindergarten students closes Monday, Sept. 22.

All Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot data - including questionnaires administered via paper, pending Family Access screenings, and any child profiles noting the reason for not participating - must be entered into ASQ Online by Friday, Sept. 26. On Tuesday of this week (Sept. 9), all Kansas ASQ Online users received a tip sheet with steps to finalize ASQ data

  • Accept all pending Family Access screenings.
  • Finalize all paper questionnaire screenings.
  • For any students who did not participate because they were older than the age cutoff, or because the teacher and family determined screening was inappropriate, or because the family decided to opt out, create a Child Profile in ASQ Online and select the appropriate “Reason for not participating” from the dropdown menu.

Once data is finalized in the ASQ Online system, it is submitted for the year — schools do not have an additional data upload. Participation rate data will be available in the KSDE Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot authenticated application later this year.

Visit agesandstages.com/ks for helpful resources, frequently asked questions and the Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot Fact Sheet

If staff would like to build their ASQ understanding to support future screenings, KSDE and the Kansas Parent Information Resource Center will offer an “Introduction to ASQ” live virtual training, 1-3:30 p.m., on Sept. 18. Register here at ksdetasn.org/events.

Please reach out to Amanda Petersen (Amanda.Petersen@ksde.gov) and Stacy Clarke (Stacy.Clarke@ksde.gov) with any requests for ASQ assistance. We’re more than happy to help ensure your data is finalized or to think through how you might improve your Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot for future years. Thank you for your hard work to make the 2025-2026 school year a great one for our youngest learners.
