The Kansas State Board of Education consists of 10 elected members, each representing a district comprised of four contiguous senatorial districts. Board members serve four-year terms with an overlapping schedule. View each one's profile and contact information by selecting his/her photo. Every other year, the State Board reorganizes to elect a Chair and Vice Chair. The current Chair is Cathy Hopkins and the Vice Chair is Danny Zeck. The State Board appoints a Commissioner of Education who serves as its executive director. The current Commissioner is Dr. Randy Watson.
The mission of the State Board of Education is to prepare Kansas students for lifelong success through rigorous, quality academic instruction, career training and character development according to each student's gifts and talents.

The Kansas State Board of Education is in the process of hiring a new State Commissioner of Education. The month of March includes several special meetings to conduct interviews. These interviews are between the Board and the candidates, and will be held in Executive Session. The Search Firm HYA is helping the Board to navigate this process.
March 3, 2026 Special Meeting, 10 a.m. - approx. 3 p.m. held in the Boardroom, in person, in the Landon Building, 900 SW Jackson, Topeka. The Board will be looking at the slate of candidates, and choose who they would like to interview. This will be in Executive Session.
The next regular meeting of the Kansas State Board of Education will take place on March 10 & 11, 2026. It will be held in person, in the Boardroom at 900 SW Jackson, just east of the Kansas State Capitol building on the first floor of the Landon office building in the Boardroom. The public is invited to attend. Agendas and materials for the meeting are provided at least 10 days prior to the meeting. The Board normally works all day Tuesday, and half of Wednesday, however, this month, they will be staying for the entire day on Wednesday to start the interviews. The interviews will continue on March 12, for the entire day. These interviews will take place in executive session at an undisclosed location in order to protect the privacy of the candidates.
March 31, 2026 Special meeting, held in the Boardroom, in person, in the Landon Building, 900 SW Jackson. On this day, the Board will conduct final interviews. These interviews and the deliberations by the Board will be held in executive session. At the April Meeting the Board will introduce the new Kansas Commissioner of Education
KANSAS STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION POLICY COMMITTEE
The Policy Committee will be meeting in Wichita, at the First Free Evangelical Church at 1825 North Woodlawn, on February 27th at 10 am. They will break for lunch and return in the afternoon to finish their business. This is a public meeting, but there will not be a livestream or recording of the meeting.
