The Kansas State Board of Education consists of 10 elected members, each representing a district comprised of four contiguous senatorial districts. Board members serve four-year terms with an overlapping schedule. View each one's profile and contact information by selecting his/her photo. Every other year, the State Board reorganizes to elect a Chair and Vice Chair. The current Chair is Cathy Hopkins and the Vice Chair is Danny Zeck. The State Board appoints a Commissioner of Education who serves as its executive director. The current Commissioner is Dr. Randy Watson.
The mission of the State Board of Education is to prepare Kansas students for lifelong success through rigorous, quality academic instruction, career training and character development according to each student's gifts and talents.

SPECIAL BOARD MEETING: NOVEMBER 18, 2025 AT 12:30 P.M.
There will be a special Board meeting on November 18th, at 12:30 p.m. It will be livestreamed, however, the meeting will largely take place in executive session as the task is to review Request for Proposal submissions for an Executive Search Firm to lead the Board in their work to hire the next Commissioner, as Dr. Watson has announced his retirement. The RFP process must be confidential and all participants have signed Non-Disclosure forms. There will be a public section of the meeting at the beginning and the end. The meeting will start at 12:30 p.m. and end at 2:30 p.m.
The Next Monthly Meeting
The next regular meeting of the Kansas State Board of Education will take place on December 9 & 10, 2025. It will be held in person, in the Boardroom at 900 SW Jackson, just east of the Kansas State Capitol building. It is held on the first floor of the Landon office building in the Boardroom. The public is invited to attend. Agendas and materials for the meeting are provided at least 10 days prior to the meeting.
