The Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) is the alternate state assessment for students with a most significant cognitive disability. These students are assessed in ELA, math, and science.
The DLM is an instructionally embedded assessment with two required assessment windows. The fall 2025 testing window is Sept. 8 – Dec. 19. The spring 2026 testing window is Feb. 3 - April 24. Test administrators who will be administering the DLM to students must complete the DLM required test administrator training which is now available on Kite Educator Portal.
The Kansas State Department of Education has the History, Government, and Social Studies Alternate Rubric which includes the classroom-based assessment in grades 4, 7, and once in high school for students with most significant cognitive disabilities. The Kansas Alternate Early Literacy Screener can be used as the dyslexia screener for students with a most significant cognitive disability to meet the requirements of KSDE reporting. An optional Kansas Early Math Alternate Assessment Rubric is available for kindergarten–third grade students with a most significant cognitive disability.
The KSDE Special Education and Title Services (SETS) team will continue to provide communication via Zoom for special education teachers administering the DLM during the 2025-26 school year. Participants will be asked to log in to view and download materials and engage with presenters. There will be opportunities for questions and the webinars will be recorded for future reference or for those unable to attend. The recording will be posted on the KSDE Dynamic Learning Maps and Essential Elements website.
