Science of Reading professional development available

Across Kansas, leaders are helping teachers translate knowledge of structured literacy into daily classroom practice. KSDE, in partnership with TNTP, invites you to join the “Supporting Quality Literacy Instruction Through Materials” professional learning series, which will focus on key practices from the science of reading and apply them within district-selected materials to strengthen literacy instruction.

Audience

This series is designed for instructional leaders who support teachers with effectively using instructional materials and bridging the gap between structured literacy knowledge and classroom practice. This includes instructional coaches, curriculum leaders, and lead teachers.

Sessions

Leaders will meet virtually on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 4–5:15 p.m. for professional learning and collaboration. The sessions run Oct. 7, through March 2026. Register here for sessions 1-5. You may register for individual sessions or the full series. The deadline to register for Session 1 is Oct. 1.

The following are the topics for the first five sessions:

  • Session 1: Oct. 7 – Introduction: Using KSDE’s Vision for Quality Instruction to Guide Effective Implementation of Instructional Materials
  • Session 2: Oct. 21 – Complex Texts: Creating a Shared Understanding of How Text Complexity Should Be Addressed in Instruction
  • Session 3: Nov. 4 – Complex Texts: Using PLCs to Determine How to Support Students Through Different Levels of Text Complexity
  • Session 4: Nov. 18 – Text-Based Writing: Building a Shared Understanding of How Text-Dependent and Text-Specific Questions Support Student Learning
  • Session 5: Dec. 2 – Text-Based Writing: Using PLCs to Determine High-Quality Questions within Instructional Materials

KSDE and TNTP look forward to partnering with you in this important work and building a statewide community of leaders committed to ensuring that instructional materials truly support high-quality literacy instruction for every student.
