Engaging with families to build strong relationships during children’s transition into kindergarten is a key strategy to prepare children, families, and schools for a successful start to the kindergarten year.
All Kansas elementary schools are required to partner with families to complete the Ages & Stages Questionnaires®, Third Edition (ASQ-3) and Ages & Stages Questionnaires®: Social-Emotional, Second Edition (ASQ:SE-2). These tools provide a snapshot of children’s developmental milestones. As caregivers know their children best, they complete both questionnaires before school staff share and discuss the screening results.
The 2024-25 Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot participation data and results are now available for review. School staff can access this information in the KSDE web application, “Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot.” KSDE has pulled and matched data from the ASQ Online system and the ENRL (Sept. 20) records submitted by schools. School staff may use the “Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot” authenticated application to manually match any initially unmatched ASQ records and improve their Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot participation rate for the year.
KSDE will be following up with school districts/systems with participation rates of less than 50% to share resources to support improved engagement and partnerships with families in future years. Good action items include evaluating how schools introduce the ASQ® to families and ensuring schools follow up with families in a timely manner to share results. The KSDEweekly articles Partnering with Kansas families to complete the Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot, Sharing Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot results with families, and Using Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot data to support a successful school year include helpful resources.
KSDE and the Kansas Parent Information Resource Center will host a three-hour “Introduction to ASQ” training, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., on Jan. 24. Teachers, principals, and other staff already familiar with the basics of ASQ® who are looking to make the Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot more meaningful can attend the training “Using ASQ to Engage with Families and Support Child Development,” 9-10:30 a.m., on March 7. Visit ksdetasn.org/events to register for trainings.
Contact Amanda Petersen, apetersen@ksde.org, and Stacy Clarke, sclarke@ksde.org, with ASQ® questions.
