The first five years of a child’s life are an incredible opportunity to set a positive direction. Strong relationships between families and teachers lay the foundation for a successful school year.
In Kansas, all elementary schools must partner with families to complete the Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot. Collecting information about each child’s development prepares schools, families and children for kindergarten. The Ages & Stages Questionnaires®, Third Edition (ASQ-3) and Ages & Stages Questionnaires®: Social-Emotional, Second Edition (ASQ:SE-2) are questionnaires completed by a child’s parent or caregiver to provide a snapshot of developmental milestones.
The 2025-2026 Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot participation data and aggregate kindergarten student results are now available for review. School staff can access this information in the KSDE web application, “Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot.” Users can request access to Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot (ASQ) in KSDE web applications. KSDE has pulled and matched data from the ASQ Online system and the ENRL (Sept. 22) records submitted by schools. School staff may use the authenticated application to manually match any initially unmatched ASQ records and improve their Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot participation rate for the year.
This is a good opportunity to reflect on this year’s Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot. What worked well in engaging with families to complete the ASQ this school year? What could improve in the future? Good action items include evaluating how schools introduce the ASQ to families and ensuring schools follow up with families in a timely manner to share results. KSDE has updated the Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot Fact Sheet with additional resources to support schools in introducing the ASQ, partnering and sharing results with families, and using ASQ data to build developmental skills. Visit agesandstages.com/ks to access the Kindergarten Readiness Snapshot Fact Sheet and other resources.
KSDE Early Childhood staff will be available to support schools in using the ASQ at upcoming events:
Contact Amanda Petersen, Amanda.Petersen@ksde.gov, and Stacy Clarke, Stacy.Clarke@ksde.gov, with ASQ questions.
