September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, fostering hope, and promoting action to prevent suicide and support those affected by it. Suicide remains a leading cause of death in Kansas and across the United States. Every conversation, act of kindness, and connection can make a difference. Through awareness, education, and support, we can work together to save lives. 

“Suicide Prevention Month reminds us there is always hope, even in the darkest moments. It’s about showing people help is available, healing is possible, and no one has to face their challenges alone," said Jennifer Slagle, Youth Suicide Prevention Coordinator with the Office of the Kansas Attorney General.  

To mark the beginning of Suicide Prevention Month, the Office of the Kansas Attorney General, as part of the Kansas Suicide Prevention Coalition, is proud to announce the winners of its statewide Suicide Prevention Youth Art Contest held to raise awareness for suicide prevention and promote messages of hope, help, strength, and resilience. 

"I am moved by the courage and creativity displayed by these young artists. Through their work, they have started critical conversations and given us a beautiful look at the themes of hope and resilience. This contest shows that art can be a powerful beacon of light for those who need it most," said Kane Sheek with the Kansas Suicide Prevention Coalition. 

The contest was open to Kansas youth in grades 6-12 and concluded on June 9, 2025. Students were invited to submit original artwork which provided an opportunity for them to share their voices, creativity, and experiences in a meaningful way. Submissions were divided into three age categories with top winners recognized in each. 

6-8th grade winners: 

1st Place: Elsie 

2nd Place: Blythe 

3rd Place: Peyton 

9-10th grade winners: 

1st Place: An 

2nd Place: Annique 

3rd Place: Ethan and Alaya (tie) 

11-12th grade winners: 

1st Place: Alexander 

2nd Place: Charlie 

3rd Place: Tegan
