Janet Waugh, 83, the longest serving member of the Kansas State Board of Education, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025. She was first elected in 1999 and retired from the board in 2023.
A 1959 graduate of Turner High School, Janet was a fierce advocate of public education, having been elected to the Turner USD 202 board of education in 1983 and serving for 16 years (eight years as president). She also served on local and state parent-teacher associations, was an honorary Life Member of the Kansas and national PTAs and served on several other district and community volunteer organizations.
Janet served as chair of the State Board twice – 2003-2004 and 2009-2010. In addition to her tireless work as a board member, she also served on the following:
In 2023, Janet received the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s (KSHSAA) Governor’s Award which recognized her for outstanding contributions in the field of secondary education in Kansas. She also was the recipient of the Kansas National Education Association (KNEA) Friend of Education award.
Janet’s funeral will be 10 a.m., on Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Maple Hill Funeral Home, 3300 Shawnee Drive, in Kansas City, Kansas. Click here for her obituary.
