Members of the Kansas State Board of Education voted to appoint Dr. Jake Steel as the next Kansas education commissioner during their monthly meeting in Topeka this week.
A native of Garden City, Steel will officially assume the commissioner’s role on June 1, succeeding current commissioner Dr. Randy Watson, who announced his intent to retire in September after having served as education commissioner since 2015.
KSDEweekly will be undergoing some changes in the coming weeks.
The Kansas State Board of Education honored Dr. Luanne Barron, superintendent of the Kansas School for the Deaf (KSD), during their annual visit to the school in Olathe this week.
The Kansas State Department of Education is set to launch a new website on Monday, April 20.
