Pictures of the Week: Gov. Laura Kelly celebrates completers of structured literacy course

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly this week celebrated 35 Topeka USD 501 educators who recently completed the Foundations of the Science of Reading: Understanding and Applying Structured Literacy Principles, the Kansas Board of Regents Blueprint for Literacy's structured literacy training course.

The 16-week course meets the science of reading licensure requirements approved by the Kansas State Board of Education. The Reading League, a nonprofit organization that advances the use of evidence-based literacy instruction, validated the course.

Gov. Kelly was introduced by Dr. Cindy Lane, director of the Blueprint for Literacy, who also recognized Kansas Education Commissioner Dr. Randy Watson, KSDE staff, State Board members, Topeka USD 501 administrators, Washburn University Department of Education faculty and legislators in attendance.

The event on the Washburn campus, in Topeka, included a panel discussion with Gov. Kelly and several Topeka USD 501 teachers who discussed issues currently facing Kansas educators, the need for continued investment in public education and the importance of teachers.

“Your dedication to children deserves recognition,” Kelly told the USD 501 teachers. “You really are my heroes.”
