The inaugural National Home Visiting Week (NHVW) will take place April 21-25, an observance to celebrate and recognize home visitors and the positive impact they make on maternal and child health outcomes.
The Institute for the Advancement of Family Support Professionals, an organization focused on strengthening home visiting and human service programs across the country, is collaborating with nonprofit partners and elected officials to organize the event. National Home Visiting Week garnered bipartisan support as U.S. Senators Chuck Grassley (R–Iowa) and Mark Warner (D–Virginia) issued a proclamation to highlight the importance of home visiting.
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly proclaimed April 21 – 25 as Kansas Home Visiting Week.
Home visits connect families with young children, prenatal through age 5, to trained family support professionals who provide customized coaching, resources and guidance through pregnancy and the early stages of a child’s development. Trained home visitors use a variety of evidence-based models to support healthy birth outcomes, increase family self-sufficiency and support children and families to enter their school journey fully prepared to learn and succeed.
The following are some home visiting programs available in Kansas:
Home visiting programs help promote student and family success with the following goals:
The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) is honored to support more than 60 Parents as Teachers (PAT) programs throughout the state. Nearly 160 school districts in Kansas participate in a Parents as Teachers program. Visit the Kansas Parents as Teachers webpage for a complete list of programs in Kansas.
The home visiting programs work cooperatively to reach as many Kansas families as possible. Families all have different goals and desires; these programs partner to match each family with the program that best meets their needs.
