State Board to receive 2024-25 annual report during October meeting

Members of the Kansas State Board of Education will hear several presentations during their monthly meeting, Oct. 14-15, in Topeka, including a draft summary of the Kansas State Department of Education’s 2024-25 annual report, "Coherence." 

Kansas Education Commissioner Dr. Randy Watson will provide the highlights for the time period covering Oct. 1, 2024, to Sept. 30, 2025, for the following areas:  

  • High school students enrolled in postsecondary courses, dual college credits earned and Advanced Placement (AP) tests with scores of 3, 4, and 5. 
  • Students taking career and technical education (CTE) classes in high school. 
  • Educators and administrators earning the Seal of Literacy for completing structured literacy courses. 
  • Teacher vacancies and the Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program (RTAP). 
  • Chronic absenteeism. 
  • The Star Recognition program that recognizes districts’ efforts to excel in the qualitative and quantitative measures of the Kansans Can outcomes: Academically prepared for postsecondary success, high school graduation, postsecondary success, kindergarten readiness, individual plan of study (IPS), social-emotional growth and civic engagement. 

 

Other presentations on the board’s October agenda include the following: 

  • KSDE staff will present information about a survey for gathering data on the use of district-issued technology devices. This is part of the State Board’s approach to further understanding the relationship between technology and education. A presentation about artificial intelligence in education will also be made. 
  • Information will be provided regarding literacy issues in higher education and training teachers in reading. 
  • KSDE Child Nutrition and Wellness will present the Kansans Can Best Practices awards, information will be shared about the Farm to School program and the innovative school lunch program in Washington County USD 108. 
  • Kansas Future Farmers of America (FFA) state officers will share impact stories from agriculture education and Kansas FFA experiences. 
  • Dr. Luanne Barron, superintendent, will present information about the Kansas School for the Deaf (KSD).  
  • Bill Faflick, executive director of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, will present KSHSAA’s annual report. 
  • Information will be provided about the tax credit for low-income student scholarship program. 

 

Action items on the board’s agenda include the following: 

  • Approve the Kansas Assessment Program’s continued work done by Assessment and Technology Solutions (ATS) at the University of Kansas.   
  • Approve the request for proposal (RFP) process for a licensing agreement from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2031, for reading and math resources aligned to the Kansas Assessment Program.   
  • Vote on the requested increases for out-of-state tuition for the Kansas School for the Deaf and the Kansas State School for the Blind. They will also be asked to vote on the negotiated agreement between the KSD and the Kansas National Education Association.
