Observation Tools

The observation tools illustrate what each component of the corresponding instructional vision looks like in action. They provide a common language to articulate what the vision looks like in practice for both teachers and students. Each tool is intentionally short yet comprehensive, focusing the observer on the most essential components. These tools are not exhaustive and should not be used for teacher evaluation. Instead, they may support systems-level progress monitoring or capture a moment-in-time “snapshot” for coaching, feedback, and development.

Leaders may use the tools to narrow their focus during classroom observations, prepare for observation debriefs, conduct walkthroughs centered on specific domains or indicators, or gather formative data on instructional quality across a school, district, or system. Teachers may use them to self-identify strengths and areas for growth or to support peer observations.

Note: The tools linked below will be revised in the 2025–2026 school year based on on-the-ground piloting and user feedback.
