The Kansas State Department of Education is updating the Star Recognition program, which continues to recognize system improvement and highlights the important work occurring in schools across Kansas.
In 2025, enhancements were made to the qualitative Star rubrics in Kindergarten Readiness, Social Emotional Growth, Individual Plans of Study, and Civic Engagement. These updates establish a new baseline for recognition and more accurately reflect the quality, depth, and impact of efforts to support student success and well-being.
As of Jan. 2026, system qualitative Star Recognitions will transition to a two-consecutive year cycle. Applications for both renewal and first-time recognition will open every other year, starting in Jan. 2027. This revised timeline aligns more closely with continuous improvement efforts, providing systems additional time to implement and refine strategies while maintaining a focus on student growth.
In summary, systems recognized in 2025 will retain their Star in 2026, and all systems—both previously recognized and new applicants—will apply in Jan. 2027. The quantitative Star Recognition process remains unchanged.
These updates strengthen a recognition process that honors the dedication, innovation, and collaboration of Kansas educators and school systems, celebrating a shared commitment to “lead the world in the success of each student.”
