Reminder: Reasonable suspicion training for CDL drivers slated for Dec. 30

The KSDE school transportation safety unit is offering reasonable suspicion training for commercial drivers license supervisors on Dec. 30, in Derby.

This workshop is open to any public or private school transportation directors, transportation supervisors, school transportation contractors, and other school officials involved with school transportation. No vendors, please.

Lt. Carson Nuss, of the Kansas Highway Patrol, will conduct the session, 9 a.m. – 12 noon, at Derby USD 260, Administrative Center, 1550 E. Walnut Grove Road. Click here to register and for more information. This training is federally mandated for all individuals who supervise individuals required to have a CDL as a condition of their employment.

Suppose your school district or school bus contractor operates a school/activity bus that requires the driver to have a CDL, and you supervise that driver. In that case, you are required by federal law to have Reasonable Suspicion training for supervisors. This class is a one-time requirement. Any school district/contractor employee is welcome to attend, even if you are not mandated to participate in the training.

Lt. Nuss has 26 years of law enforcement experience, three years as a sheriff’s deputy, and the past 24 years with the Kansas Highway Patrol. Carson served seven years in the U.S. Army, both active and reserve, as a military police (MP) officer. Since Aug. 2009, he has been assigned to the drug and alcohol evaluation unit. Lt. Carson is a certified instructor for SFST (standard field sobriety test), ARIDE (advanced roadside impaired driving enforcement), DRE (drug recognition expert), and evidential breath testing.
