Student use of technology, AI framework to be considered by State Board

Members of the Kansas State Board of Education will hear several presentations during their February meeting related to artificial intelligence (AI) and students’ use of technology. 

Board members will meet Feb. 10-11, in the first floor board room of the Landon State Office Building, 900 S.W. Jackson, in Topeka.  

Drs. James Basham and Trey Vasquez of the University of Kansas will present the “Framework for Responsible AI Integration in Pre-K-20 Education,” developed with the Center for Innovation, Design and Digital Learning (CIDDL).   

The framework covers the following overarching tasks to responsibly integrate AI in Pre-K-20 education: 

  • Establish a stable, human-centered foundation. 
  • Implement future-focused strategic planning for AI integration.  
  • Ensure AI educational opportunities for every student.  
  • Conduct ongoing evaluation, professional learning, and community development.  

 

Board members will hear other related presentations regarding the effects of district-owned devices, the impact of these devices on students’ development and a district’s cell phone policy.  

Other presentations board members will hear during their February meeting include: 

  • Representatives of the national firm tasked with searching for the next Kansas education commissioner will provide an update on their progress. 
  • Dr. Frank Harwood, deputy commissioner of KSDE’s fiscal and administrative services, will update the board on the status of education bills currently in the Kansas legislature. 
  • The KSDE accreditation and design team will provide information about the cohort of six special purpose schools under the Kansas Education System Accreditation (KESA). 
  • The lack of funding for cybersecurity for districts will be highlighted by KSDE fiscal and IT staff. 
  • KSDE early childhood staff members will present on the Kansas Parents As Teachers (PAT) program. 
  • Kim Wahaus, a U.S. history teacher at Olathe South High School, Olathe USD 233, will give a presentation related to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence using AI. 
  • There will be drama performances from Spring Hill USD 230 students. 

 

Other action items on the board’s Feb. 10 agenda include: 

  • Act to approve a contract with the Kansas Department of Agriculture to inspect summer food sites. 
  • Act to approve a contract for dyslexia and literacy services, required by statute. 
  • Act on recommendations of the Professional Practices Commission (PPC).
